The 3 Biggest Diet Myths of 2019 Debunked

Online Diet Consultation

On DietSuchi, we often discuss how proper diet is important for maintaining a healthy body and mind. Nutritious Food in right proportions can bring miraculous changes to your body making you look younger, fit and confident. When people start their fitness journeys, to save a few extra bucks they turn to the internet to garner information about exercise regimes and diet. Unfortunately, the web full of false information and baseless healthy advice costs them their time and body with unsatisfactory results, in some cases injuries and side effects too. As one of the best dietitians in Odisha, I’ve encountered many such cases where people tend to pick up wrong dietary choices or fall prey to myths that bring nothing but harm to their bodies.

Here are the top 3 diet myths that were common in 2019:

1. Fats will make you fat.!

“Stay away from fatty foods” is probably the most common household advice you will come across while trying to lose weight. Though our body stores dietary fat more easily than the other 2 macronutrients (protein & carbohydrate), but it is to carry out our generic body functions. Fats will not make you “fat” if you source them from healthy options like Nuts, Ghee, Butter, Olive oil, Avocado, etc following a structured diet plan.

2. Egg yolks are bad for you:

Almost every random gym-going dude on the internet says how you should carefully separate the egg yolk from the egg whites to prevent yourself from getting fat or cholesterol which may affect your heart. If you’re still believing this then STOP! According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it was found that there is no connection between whole eggs and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. In fact, yolks contain Vitamin A, D, E, K and Omega 3s which are good for your health.

3. Excessive protein can damage your kidneys:

There is rampant propaganda of myths around proteins and their effects on kidneys. Many believe that high protein intake puts excess stress on kidneys for clearing the metabolites of protein, which can damage it hence once should not consume more protein or take supplements like Whey and Creatine. But high protein intake may cause a problem in people who have pre-existing kidney diseases, not in everyone. Studies have shown that people who consume higher protein diets are healthier than people who don’t, it simply does NOT make sense to not construct your diet around your protein intake.

These myths are just the tip of the iceberg, there are many such false proclaims running through the web. As one of the best dietitians in Odisha, my humble advice will be to act smartly and seek professional help before believing anything and everything that concerns your health.
